5 Safety tips to help dogs cope with natural disasters
Natural disaster do not go down well with humans, and so is the case with pets. The dogs suffer from mental and physical shocks, trauma and injury in such circumstances. Taking precautions and adopting simple safety tips can help your dog to cope up with such situations. Here is a list of safety tips you must adopt to help your dog deal with natural disasters.
1. Set a rescue alarm
Whether you are aware of it or not, there is an alarm that has sensors, which prompt you whenever there are outbreaks of disasters and your pet is in danger. Your first and foremost duty will be to install such a rescue alarm on your door. This will be beneficial for you as you might be informed by the loud ring of the alarm whenever your dog is in an accident. Even if you are away from your home, the other members of the family will immediately become aware of the disaster and rush to help the dog immediately.
2. Train your dog to withstand disasters
There are cases when a house is set on fire and the traumatized dog gets trapped inside it, unable to escape. You must train your dog to fight out such situations. Create an exit drill in your home or the kennel where your pet dog lives. Now create a calibrated situation that there is an accident in your house. Train the dog on how it will escape from that situation. Perform this act in frequent intervals. That way, when it really meets an accident, it will be brave enough to combat it.
3. Buy your dog safety equipments
You must have bought a lot of accessories for your dog so far, such as dog collar, woolen coat, leases, toothbrush, etc. Now it is the time to buy your dog some accessories that will serve as its safety measure during the time of accidents too. Replace a regular dog vest with that of a flame retardant one that has number of pockets attached to it. You can slip in the dog’s information, its address and other important messages inside these pockets to help the dog from getting lost during disasters. These vests are also capable of making the dog float in water during floods.
4. Ensure that the kennel has all the safety measures
In case if you have a pet dog that lives inside a kennel outside your home, you need to be more careful. You might never know when an accident occurs. Further, even if you see that there is an accident in the kennel, rushing inside the home and getting the required safety tools to prevent it might be too late. Thus, treat the kennel just the way you treat your home. Equip it with all the necessary safety measures. Set a rescue disaster alarm inside the kennel, just the way you have done for your home, keep arrangements for fire retardation, make it strong enough to withstand the harsh weather and storm, keep provisions for an emergency exit, etc.
5. Observe for any abnormal behavior
You must remember one thing very clearly, animals have sixth sense. This means, your dog can sniff any impending danger, such as a sudden change in weather or a possible outbreak of fire, much before you can realize it. Therefore, whenever your dog behaves abnormally do not ignore it altogether thinking that it is being too naughty or it is hungry. This might be its warning to you to make yourself prepared for the approaching danger.
