1. Maintain a cool environment

Keep your pet cat indoors in a shady cool area. If the floor is tiled or marble then it’s ideal. The restroom is also a great option as it is cool through the day but ensure it is otherwise secure. Keeping the fan on or the air conditioner on low is also a good option. This however can be avoided unless the cat is going to be left alone for several hours. A cool and shady area with a lot of watered plants also can be a delight in summers for both you and your little pet.

2. Make water available at all times

Dehydration is a common threat. Ensure your pet cat has enough fluids through the day. Always check to re-fill the water bowl, you can also check with the vet on food that can be given as natural coolants.

3. Fur as protective layer

Your pet cat’s fur is also protection against the heat, and can help in avoiding sun burns. However if there is excess fur then a little trimming at the vet’s can ensure a cooler stay during the summers and also avoid moisture related skin issues.

4. Wet towel

To help your pet cat you can also place a wet towel for her to cool off on, or even place bottles of cold water under her rug. Also useful if you plan to travel on a sunny day and take your pet along. If your pet prefers a sit-out area, then sprinkling water constantly can ensure the place is cool and comfy.

5. Find a cool place for your cat

Don’t forget that your pet cat is best left in the shade and safety of your house. Never leave your cat in the car even for a few minutes as this can cause serious problems in the heat of summer. Also make sure you cat does not wander into the heat outside the house during the peak hours, ensure he/she is indoors and comfortable. Leave the bowls of food and water also in shade. Make sure you do not leave your cat unattended to for long hours during summer.

Keeping an eye out for problems in advance can help avoid disaster situations. You need to look out for normal food and fluid intake in your cat. Is your cat’s breathing normal or rapid and shallow? Is your cat behaving normally alert or unusually lethargic and tired? Are your cat’s gum a normal pink or red? If you notice any unusual symptoms then don’t hesitate to rush your pet to the nearest vet or animal help center. If you live in areas that have extreme temperatures, then you can consider additional options such as buying a cool bed for your cat or also having a sitter if you are planning to leave the cat alone through the day. Allowing the cat its normal exercise is good, but avoid over working your cat in summers as this heats up the body even further. Always remember your cats trust you to know what’s best for them so being responsible, cautious and sensitive to your pets needs can go a long way in keeping your pet cat a loving bundle of purrs.
