6 Tips to prevent dental disease in dogs

Though most of us take care of our dogs by monitoring their smallest need, we forget their oral care. An animal's oral hygiene is as important as it is for humans. This applies to dog as well. Things like yellow teeth or bad breath does not alarm most of the dog owners as they consider this a trait in dogs from birth and requires no specific attention. This is a myth. In reality bad breath or any unusual appearance must be treated immediately or they can result in harmful dental disease and make your pet suffer. Following are some guidelines about preventing dental diseases in dogs.

1. Keeping a regular check

You must maintain track of your dog’s teeth condition. Check your dog's teeth regularly. If you find sign of any dental problem, contact your dog's vet immediately. To check your dog’s teeth, lift its lips around the mouth and then have a close check at back and front. Don’t be in a hurry. Check the teeth gently. Take your dog to its vet every month and let the vet also check your dog's teeth in each visit.

2. Preventing tartar problem

Many dogs have the common problem of build up tartar. The best way to eliminate this problem is regular home care. For this, brushing is the best option. You will find toothpastes which are specially made for your dog. They are totally harmless and even if your pet swallows it, it won’t be at any risk. You also get pets' chew toys which can reduce the tartar build up. Some pet foods are already formulated that help in plaque removal

3. Using toothbrush

You can use finger brush for cleaning your dog’s teeth. You also get a special long toothbrush. The finger brush can ease your dog while brushing and it would not create any fuss. They are soft and do not harm your pet. If you can’t brush your dog’s teeth, then oral rinses is also a good option. Do not give your dog real bones as they can upset gastrointestinal and can also result in tooth fractures.

4. Using toothpastes

Never use the same toothpaste what you use. Toothpaste for human use contains products like xylitol which is a sugar substitute. This can be harmful for your dog and can result in the internal problems, if they swallow it. Also do not give baking soda as it can also upset the digestive tract and stomach.

5. Tackling bad breathe

Most of the dog owners complain about the bad breath of their dogs. To prevent this problem you can give your dog pleasant breath plus tablets which are known for deodorizers and natural cleanliness. They also help in eliminating the gas and stool problems of dogs.

6. Maintain a good diet

Diet also plays an important role in maintaining a hygienic dental fitness. Avoid giving food which sticks to the teeth. This food gets accumulated into the dog's teeth and can result in decay and dental problems. Raw food can be good for your dog. Recreational chewing must be encouraged.

Dogs rarely have dental problems but a regular check up and following the above guidelines is very important for any untoward illness.
