How do I check for dog flu?

Could dog flu make your pet throw up? Someone asked me to tell them if their dog had dog flu. Is dog flu contagious, because she has a two year old kid at home? I think the dog might also have fever and his nose was extremely dry and warm. I believe you have to check the ears too when the pet has a temperature right? The vomiting included some yellowish substance and a little food with water. The appetite has also gone down of the two month old basset hound. The lady told me her veterinarian was not around and she trusts nobody else.
