How do I help my children cope with their pet's euthanasia?

I don't have words to explain the grief, my spouse and I is going through due to the euthanasia of our long time pal, our best buddy, DJ, an alsatian. But harder than that is watching the way my children are behaving, both of them are twelve and fifteen years old, how do I help my children cope with this phase, the grief due to the pet euthanasia they are experiencing for the first time. I need effective suggestion desperately.

I feel sorry for your loss. I have also experienced something like this a couple of years ago and till now the entire incident gives me the shivers. It is real hard to pull the plug on your pet partner. Since, then I never imagined to get a pet. The incidence really shattered me. My father did the last ceremonies and my yellow lab used to come to my dreams. I won’t say 'haunt' because he was an angel in true sense.

See, it is hard for your children because the age that you have mentioned in the question is very young, so I'd advice that you be strong, don’t lose patience and most importantly don’t scold them and be hard on them, because they are emotionally devastated at this moment.

You and your spouse need to be stronger. Seeing your dull and sad faces will invoke dullness and sadness in their hearts and minds. So, please try to be stronger and try to take your kids out and spend more time with them, because it is quite possible that either of them could now slip into depression. Take care!!!
