Why are the competitions for world ugliest dog held?

I have a Chinese crested hairless dog, which is considered one amongst the world’s ugliest dog. However, I could never understand the rationale behind rendering a dog ugly on mere its looks. My dog is 3 years old now, and I never bought another pet for myself, as he just became my best friend, and has been loyal to me more than most of my friends. Having said that, I just want to know a little thing from you guys who have pets, and who don’t, whether why are the competitions held for the alleged world’s ugliest dog! It really hurts me, when I read about them. Can’t these competitions just be banned anyways? What do you think?

I guess the tag of the world’s ugliest dogs is in itself a type of derogatory remark which has been passed at the doggie breed. I guess the looks of the doggie breed matters a lot but it does not matter to that extent wherein you give the breed a tag which is not suitable for the breed, like – ugly, atrocious etc;. All these terms actually make you feel bad.

Now, as you have mentioned in your question that the breed which you own is in itself not that cool with the looks but is really faithful so I must say that the doggie breed must be judged with the faith and the way it is with the pet owner, not by the looks. Consider an example – suppose you select a breed, let’s say, Chihuahua, the breed is simply amazing with the looks but it is atrocious when you consider the behavior so I would say whether you buy this breed or a breed which is more easy to tame. See, if you want to buy the doggie for just to make a fashion statement then you can be buying a Chihuahua or a poodle. And yes, the animal welfare association should be banning all such contest which cast a slur on the dogs soon.
