Do your homework before giving the pet as holiday gift

Are pets a commodity? How can we just wrap them up in a silver foil and thrust on someone in the name of a gift? The tradition of giving pets as gifts is growing at an alarming rate. Why not, when they too cost as much a hi-fi gizmo?

Before gifting a pet, the owners don't even think where the poor chap will finally end up. A conscious balance must be maintained between both the giver or shunner to be more precise, and the receiver. The receiver must consider very carefully whether he'll be able to take care of the animal. Is he having enough time to spend with the pet? Is he really ready to welcome the new member in the family? Straightaway he must deny the gift, in case of any doubt, but politely without offending the giver.

The person who is giving the gift must also make sure that the acceptor is capable enough to take care of the pet's medication, food and pampering too. The main reason behind shunning a gifted pet is the handling cost. Pets are fabulous companions, but never kill them by treating as fancy trash without life.
