EBay Stays its Ban on Pet Sales

Impelled by the pet boom, internet auctioneer EBay Inc. earlier planned to reconsider its ban on online pet sales. Plan for a separate paid classified-ad category for pet breeders was in the pipeline, but it was ditched off after receiving thousands of angry mails.

The letter writers were worried, company spokesman Hani Durzy said, that the listings would encourage puppy mills, where animals are sometimes bred in unsanitary conditions, and that it would be difficult to differentiate between legitimate animal shelters and unsavory sources.

The reaction is awe-inspiring. It's time we understand that pets are not merely lump of fleshes or commodities to be auctioned. They are today more than a family member. Pets have entered the mainstream and are at par with our own lives.
