Nevada poised to include pets and service animals in disaster planning

A new legislation passed in the Nevada Legislature has given persons with pets and service animals a reason to smile. The Senate Bill 81, which gives recognition to pets and service animals in disaster or emergency planning, was unanimously passed by both the chambers and will come into effect as soon as Governor Jim Gibbons signs it.

This important legislation has recieved a warm response from The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Eric Sakach, director of The HSUS West Coast Regional Office, said:

We are pleased that Nevada lawmakers recognize pets as important members of the family and thank them for working to keep people and pets together in emergencies. When Governor Gibbons signs SB 81, Nevada will be protecting its citizens by helping to ensure they will be able to evacuate safely with their pets.

Senators Dina Titus, Randolph Townsend and Valerie Wiener sponsored this important legislation which is aimed at addressing the needs of persons with pets or service animals.
