Pet welfare act gets stricter as a law

Posted By: Neha | Apr 4 2007

Under the new law coming into force, in England, people will be legally liable for the basic well being of their pets. The Animal Welfare Act, which turned into a law last week, has become harder, as the fines have been increased up to £20,000 for cruelty. The RSPCA has described the law as historic, as the act represents a first new law on animal welfare in 94 years.

The Circus act makes sure that the farm animals have a proper diet and are also, properly taken care of. The minimum age for buying a pet will rise from 12 to 16 as under the same act. The act also states that, children below 16 years cannot be allowed to win a pet as a prize. Not only this, the act also bans the docking of dogs' tails. However, the dogs used by the police, armed forces, search and rescue, and gundogs are an exception in this case.
