Shielding Pets
In Hanover County, North Carolina, local officials and volunteers have come up with a plan to protect the pets from hurricane. Most probably, the arrangement will culminate by next year's festivities.

Most likely, pets would be accepted in crates that are roomy enough for food, water and (in the case of cats, kitty litter) and roomy enough for the animals to move around. Like the Florida County, the floor and the walls would be covered with plastic sheets in order to give them more comfortable. The animals would be babysat by well-prepared volunteers, and owners could visit at specified times.
For its part, New Hanover County Animal Control will continue to accept furry refugees, as it does now. Director Jean McNeil is working on shelter plans with the emergency management folks and with Carolina Canines for Service, which boarded pets rescued from Katrina.
