Threats for your pets at home

Posted By: Neha | Apr 11 2007

Let's start with Easter lilies only. Easter lilies can cause kidney failure in your pet, even if eaten in small amounts. Other plants like, the azalea, kalanchoe, oleander, and sago palm are dangerous for both cats and dogs. Even the Tulips and narcissus bulbs can be a reason for your pets' cardiac problems.

Mostly the cause of the illness of our pets lies in our own homes. They are pets and will eat anything that they can reach. So, if we want to keep our pet's safe and sound, home is where we have to start with. After all, charity begins at home only. Even pills and other medications should be kept safe and away from pets. If you'll believe, even Xylitol, the natural sweetener, which these days is being used in a lot of sugar-free products, including gum, ice creams etc can cause poisoning in dogs.

We already know about the chocolates. But, as a matter of fact, baking and high quality dark chocolates are more of a threat then milk chocolates. Even grapes and raisins seem to be hazardous to dogs. The reason, however, is still unknown. So, to make sure that you and your pet stays out of the problem, just do one thing, make your home a poison free one. Make sure you lock up all the toxic things in cabinets or containers. Even the anti-freeze, other car fluids, paints and yard chemicals shouldn't be left open. And if, by chance, you suspect your pet to have eaten anything wrong, call your vet right away! Prevention is the best cure!
