Hey I'm a student in North carolina and always wondered why this breed of dog is called as German Shepherds? Whether it was originated in Germany, if not then why German shepherd? Does anyone out there know what are these dogs called other than german shepherds, please tell me about it. Also tell me about the historical facts related to this breed of dogs, their popularity around the world. If anyone can, then please inform me about ideology behind giving them the name german shepherd. How are they related to shepherds? All these questions have raised my interest in this breed. Please answer these questions soon. Thanks in advance!

German Shepherds are also known as an Alsatian. It is a breed of large-sized dog and yes it was originated in Germany. It is a relatively new breed of dog, the date of origin dates back to to 1899. As part of the Herding Group, the German Shepherd was developed originally for herding and guarding sheep. Because of its strength, intelligence and abilities in obedience training it is often employed in police and military roles around the world. This breed of dog first gained its international recognition at the decline of World War I when the returning soldiers spoke highly of this breed. After that animal actors Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart popularised the breed further. This breed is typically among the most popular in other registries as well. This dog breed was named Deutscher Schäferhund by Von Stephanitz which literally meant "German Shepherd Dog". It was given this name due to its original purpose of assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep. At the time, all other herding dogs in Germany were referred to by this name; they thus became known as Altdeutsche Schäferhunde or Old German Shepherd Dogs. Shepherds were first exported to Britain in 1908, and the UK Kennel Club began to recognise the breed in 1919.
