Can you tell me about the origin of the australian shepard?

I have an Australian shepherd. Before purchasing it, I too was curious to know about its history and origin. I was under the impression that this breed originated in Australia. But I was surprised to learn that it originated in Western United States just for herding purposes. Actually the thing goes like this, in the past, I don’t remember the year clearly though, before 1st World War the breed was used to escort a group of sheep from Australia. This made their name Australian shepherds. The breed rose to fame in the post 1st World War era with the boom in western riding.
