As its name specifies, the tail of the deer is completely white in color and adds to its beauty and wonderful features. Another attractive feature of this creature are the beautiful antlers it has. These antlers are both branching and single. Length of the antlers also varies in various white tailed deer species. The numbers and size of the antlers usually depict the age of the white tailed deer, however, it is actually a sign of positive aging and health of the deer.

Petting a white tailed deer is a fabulous experience as this wonderful mammal is beautiful and extremely adorable besides being an amazing company. Petting a white tailed deer is similar to petting other domestic animals and includes everything - right from its feeding to its bathing and vaccination so as to prevent the pet from various animal diseases. You need to be really cautious and adhere to timely hygiene practices, as it deserves nothing less than you being its perfect mentor and care taker. It is a known fact that the beautiful coat of this deer looks more amazing and attractive when cleaned properly and maintained under most hygienic environmental conditions. Therefore, you have to take utmost care about its cleanliness which should always be timely and accurate. In this regard, anybody who wishes to keep the white tailed deer as a pet, should take expert advice from various zoo keepers who are in the business of taking care of and petting white tailed deer.
Combing
Care should be taken to use a soft brush to comb the coat, as it is extremely delicate and the hair of the coat could just break away if harsh and hard ended brushes are used for this purpose. Combing should always be done prior to and after the bathing process. This keeps the coat smooth and lustrous, hence providing hygiene as well as beauty to the deer.
Bathing
While bathing the deer, you should take special care to use chemical free and natural bathing oils, soaps and shampoos. This would not only enhance the look of the white tailed deer but would also make sure that no harmful chemicals affect the skin and the beautiful hair coat of your unique pet. The white tailed deer needs to be given a bath about one to two times a week with a complete ritual of oiling and shampooing and the routine has to be maintained for better health and maintenance of your pet.
Feeding
The white tailed deer does not really need complete assistance when it comes to feeding the pet. This is because the mammal is usually a natural grazer which thrives on green grass, berries, fruits, nuts and grains. However, feeding the small fawns of the deer requires a lot of attention and care as the fawns are mostly fed on fresh milk.
While feeding the fawn of white tailed deer, it is crucial to sanitize the feeding bottle so as to ensure that it does not get contaminated or cause infection to the small one in any manner. The nipple should also be sanitized along with the feeding bottle. This process could be carried out using hot soapy water. Once the process is complete the bottle and nipple should be kept for drying. Only after these accessories are completely dry, the feeding bottle should be filled with goat colostrum's or deer colostrum's (mostly in the case if the fawn white deer is much younger). This colostrum helps in building muscle mass in the white tailed deer and also helps in building and developing the immune system which is very important to fight off various diseases. The feeding bottles should never be filled in advance but only at the time of feeding as it can lead to contamination with bacteria developing inside the bottle and the milk. The bottle should be held at 45 degree angle while feeding the fawn until it develops the habit of self feeding.
Vaccination
The vaccination of the white tailed deer should be carried out timely in consultation with a reputed vet. Vaccinations help the pet from being affected by several prevalent diseases during the growing-up years.
