Singapura: One of the world's smallest cat breeds

Origin

Singapura is said to have his origin in the streets of Singapore and is known there as ‘kucinta’ or ‘cat of love’. Tommy and Hal Meadow bought this feline creature in United States in the year 1975. They were responsible in making it a popular breed in North America. Tommy Meadow was a perfect breeder of the Burmese, Abyssinians, and Siamese breed of cats. She successfully bred the Singapura and skillfully maintained the consistency in the physical attributes of this breed. Singapura ranks 32 in popularity among the list of breeds by The Cat Fanciers’ Association and holds a position in the Guinness Book of World Records as the smallest breed of cat.

Physical appearance

The male Singapura weighs around 6-7 pounds and the female cat breed weighs 4-5 pounds with a height of 6-8 inches. This cat has a small body, with a round head and big features. He looks like a mini cheetah and possesses large almond shaped eyes, oversized ears and a silky brownish coat with ticked patterns in the fur. This petite animal possesses strong legs and has a muscular body.

Temperament

The Singapura is a people’s cat with an extremely affectionate, loving, and expressive nature. It exudes a lot of energy and loves to climb on top of anything including someone’s shoulders to get a clear view. It has a gentle voice and charms everyone easily with its soft behavior. This clan of animal is intelligent and inquisitive by nature and loves to be on the move always.

Grooming

One of the best things about this breed is that it requires less care. A weekly brushing of the coat, trimming the nails and cleaning of the ears is all that is required to maintain hygiene. One can occasionally use a damp cloth to wipe down the coat of this cat to retain its shine.

Ideal living conditions

This cat breed demands a lot of attention due to his extrovert nature. Therefore, he does very well with energetic people and pets around. He loves to be pampered and looks for opportunities to satisfy his playful nature. Owing to his social nature, he loves to be surrounded by people always. The petite frame of a Singapura increases the risk of hurting himself while a playful hiding in a small place. Therefore, one needs to pet-proof the house before owning a Singapura.

Life expectancy

The average life expectancy of a Singapura cat is 12 years. Nevertheless, there are cases when this cat breed has lived up to 15 years due to the care taken by the owners.

Health issues

The Singapura does not have any specific health problems or genetic issues. However, these cats require the general vaccination and annual check-ups once they are 8 years old. The female Sigapura is prone to a health condition named Uterine Inertia during pregnancy, which needs a caesarian section while delivery.

Singapura can be an owner’s delight with the loving companionship and the happiness he spreads. After all, big things come in small packages.
