It's a great thing that your son wants to buy an iguana, it's totally safe with an iguana but I also think that it's tough for a kid to take care of an iguana. A green iguana needs lots of care & is also very expensive lizard to buy. You can buy that easily in Texas & also on internet but you have to prepare the equipments for iguana before buying an iguana & the equipments may cost more than an iguana for its proper care. Sometimes, that little iguanas grow into a 4 foot lizard so this need a lot of space for that iguana.
An iguana is an omnivore (eat both meat & plants ) so it's not tough to feed them.
A snake is not so wise choice because they need some free space to roam around & they will get hurt because of this nature in a house. A snake is always a carnivore (who eats meat only). A snake needs less space in comparison with an iguana. Beginners should start with ball pythons, king snakes & corn snakes.
Most of the people want tortoise as a pet. A tortoise needs lots of care & water but it would be a smart choice for everyone who can afford them.
