Pet training is a very crucial phase in the pet’s life and also in the life of the pet-owner. This phase is the deciding phase, which helps us to decide the actual nature of the dog. If the dog is properly trained it will be a nice companion to be with, else it can turn out to be the nastiest one.
I have a yellow lab, before the yellow lab I had a border terrier and I must confess that my border terrier was disobedient. He always restrained any and every type of authority. But still I loved him very much. Now, he is gone but the yellow lab is very obedient. This is because I've learnt my lesson from the border terrier, which is to train the dog efficiently.
Now you must be thinking of a hard army training which will require a strict trainer, which is wrong. You don’t have to be like that. What you have to do is to resort to the time honored classical training, popular by the name of positive reinforcement.
The positive reinforcement will only require you to shower love and affection over your pet when s/he shows a particular type of behavior which is desirable. You can go to the extent of giving your pet his/her favorite treat when s/he depicts a good behavior. Then sooner or later the pet will get conditioned that he will be getting some reward for showing a particular type of behavior. This is what I feel you should do.
Wish you great luck!
